STORM IN THE NIGHT

Storm in the Night by Leopold Staff

A storm raged through the night.

Flashes,

groans, whistles.

The rumble of carts, the thunder of drums, the clash of sheet metal, the rattle of armour.

Lightnings,

thunderbolts,

cracks,

rumblings,

pounding hooves

Like a furious raid by a savage invader.

Then everything fell silent.

At dawn, I step outside,

It is empty and deserted.

Only on the road,

In the tracks of repelled, shattered fugitives,

Puddles gleam like shields with jagged edges.
